Congratulations to fourth
grader Karen Therrien,
who wrote a winning essay
“What Freedom Means to Me”.
The contest was sponsored by Fox & Roach Realtors, Cherry Hill.
Karen won a $100 savings bond.
To me, freedom is like an eagle soaring through the air. As each wing
beats, it spirals higher and higher into the misty clouds. To me,
freedom is like a cheetah running into the wind as it breathes the sweet
summer air. To me, freedom is like a dolphin cutting through the water
with the greatest of ease. Freedom is like a weeping willow reaching
its branches out and feeling the wind rustle its leaves. Freedom is
like a wolf singing to the moon. As the wolf reaches its heart out to
it, the wolf feels one with the moon. First the song is as high-pitched
as the shriek of an eagle. When it ends, it is as low as the deep
rumble of thunder. Freedom is like a polar bear sitting on the ice
under the many lights of the northern stars. Freedom is like fire. Not
the fire we warm ourselves with. It is the fire that's inside of us.
It turns us away from wrong and guides us to do what is right. If you
look deep into the eyes of any animal, plant, or human, you will see it
burning. Someday, I would like to live in that type of freedom, the
type of freedom that I believe God wants us to live in. Someday, I will
get out there, where the eagle flies and the dolphin swims. That is
where I belong and in my heart I know that for a fact. Then I can be
spiritually, truly, free.
